Doppler ultrasound of blood vessels is a non-invasive diagnostic method that allows you to assess the condition of blood vessels and the characteristics of blood flow in them. This method is based on the Doppler effect, which consists in changing the frequency of ultrasonic waves when reflected from moving objects, such as red blood cells.
During the procedure, a special sensor emits ultrasonic waves that are reflected from moving blood cells and return to the sensor. This allows you to obtain information about the speed and direction of blood flow, as well as the structure and patency of the vessels.
Doppler ultrasound can be used to examine the vessels of the head and neck, lower extremities, as well as other parts of the body.
The speed and direction of blood flow
The presence of narrowings (stenoses) or blockages (occlusions) in the vessels
The condition of the vessel walls, including the presence of atherosclerotic plaques or blood clots
Abnormalities in the development of vessels or their damage
Atherosclerosis (the presence of plaques in the vessels)
Thrombosis (the presence of blood clots)
Stenosis (narrowing of the lumen of the vessels)
Aneurysms (expansion of the walls of the vessels)
Varicose veins
Dizziness, tinnitus
Ischemic heart disease
Episodes of loss of consciousness
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Pain, swelling, numbness or cramps in the legs
High cholesterol
Varicose veins
Frequent headaches, migraines
Previous heart attack or stroke
Special preparation for Doppler is usually not required.
It is recommended to refrain from smoking, dtinking tea, cofee and alcohol a few hours before the examination, as these substances can affect the tone of the vessels.
During the procedure, the patient is in a comfortable position, a special gel is applied to the skin to improve contact with the sensor.
The doctor moves the sensor over the area of study, obtaining the necessary data
Doppler is a safe procedure and has no absolute contraindications.
Depending on the area of study, the procedure may have some features:
Upper limb vessels: The examination is performed in a sitting or lying position, with the doctor examining both the superficial and deep vessels of the upper limbs.
