Cardiac rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is an important step in restoring heart health and improving the physical condition of patients after cardiovascular events. The program takes into account the individual needs of each patient and includes: physical exercises, dietary recommendations, cardiac supervision and psychological support to improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the risk of cardiac complications.

Indications for cardiac rehabilitation:

Recent myocardial infarction

Previous acute coronary syndrome

Chronic stable angina

Congestive heart failure

Condition after coronary artery bypass grafting

Condition after interventional coronary artery treatment

Condition after heart valve surgery

After inflammatory heart diseases

As a component of the treatment of hypertension

In athletes after overtraining

Peripheral arterial disease with pain in the arms or legs during physical activity (intermittent claudication)

Past inflammatory heart disease

Goals of cardiac rehabilitation:

Short-term::

Control/(reduction/disappearance) of cardiac symptoms

Increasing functionality

Limiting or eliminating the negative psychological and physiological effects of cardiovascular disease

Improving psychosocial and employment status

Long-term::

Influence the natural course of heart disease

Stabilize or regress atherosclerosis

Reduce the risk of sudden death or repeated heart attack

Benefits of undergoing a cardiac rehabilitation program:

Rehabilitation of cardiac patients is aimed not only at treating existing heart problems, but also at preventing new ones.

Participation in a cardiac rehabilitation program in Kyiv allows you to take care of your health in the rhythm of everyday life, rather than putting it on pause.

Patients are given the opportunity to learn how to independently control their health with the help of psychological support, guidelines on proper nutrition, physical activity, and recommendations from cardiologists.

The program plan is based on modern European protocols, which allows it to be adjusted to each patient individually.

What does cardiac rehabilitation include (stages):

First, the cardiologist conducts a detailed examination: analyzes medical documents, communicates with the patient, performs an ECG, cardiac ultrasound, and bicycle ergometry (BEM) to determine physical readiness for rehabilitation and initial objective indicators of physical activity. After that, the patient undergoes initial consultations with a psychologist and a nutritionist to assess the psychological state and draw up an individual nutrition plan. Important: tests are not included in the cost of rehabilitation and are paid separately.

At this stage, a team of specialists – a cardiologist, a rehabilitation specialist, a psychologist and a nutritionist – creates an individual plan for each patient based on the initial data. The medication schedule, nutrition, physical activity and psychological support are taken into account. To ensure a comprehensive approach, a family doctor is involved if necessary.

Before starting physical rehabilitation, doctors adjust the necessary health indicators: blood pressure, sugar level, etc. A psychologist and a nutritionist continue to work with the patient to prepare for active loads. If additional correction is not needed, the patient immediately moves on to the next stage.

The patient begins physical rehabilitation under the supervision of a specialist, and also works with a psychologist for emotional support and motivation. Both areas are aimed at strengthening health and adapting to a new rhythm of life.

An interim review is conducted after a month. Cycle ergometry helps assess progress, and doctors adjust the load, diet, and prescription as needed. After the interim review, the patient continues the rehabilitation program, taking into account the adjustments made.

Finally, the cardiologist performs a control ultrasound of the heart and provides the patient with recommendations for maintaining health in the future.

Cardiac rehabilitation

According to the definition of the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR), cardiac rehabilitation is a coordinated set of measures necessary both to have a beneficial effect on the causes of cardiovascular disease and to create the best physical, mental and social opportunities that allow the patient to maintain or restore optimal functioning in society and improve their lifestyle in accordance with the advice of health professionals, slow down the progression or promote the reversal of the disease.

Cardiac rehabilitation in the city of Kyiv does not require interruption from your normal lifestyle. It is aimed at restoring physical activity, improving heart and vascular functions, and controlling risk factors: high blood pressure, excess weight, elevated glucose, or cholesterol levels.

Duration of Cardiac Rehabilitation

The basic package of the Docos Medical cardiac rehabilitation program is designed for 2 months. Depending on objective medical needs or the patient’s preference, it can be extended for another month or more.

Advantages of Using a Fitness Watch During the Cardiac Rehabilitation Course

In our program, we use a Garmin fitness watch:

  • The built-in Pulse Ox pulse oximeter measures blood oxygen saturation levels
  • Evaluates your training status using MET (metabolic equivalent)
    • Provides advanced running dynamics data, including ground contact time balance, stride length, and vertical ratio
    • Physiological metrics and advanced sleep data
    • Battery: up to 7 days in smartwatch mode; up to 6 hours in GPS mode with music
    • Smartphone synchronization
    • Ability to share physical activity data with your rehabilitation specialist

    In what format is communication maintained?

    Our goal is to ensure convenience and optimal conditions for you during your treatment. A personal manager is assigned to communicate with the patient: reminding about physical activities outside the clinic, assisting with nutrition, reminding about homework, and connecting with doctors if necessary. Using a Garmin fitness watch during the rehabilitation process allows us to monitor your vital signs with greater accuracy and efficiency.

    Are there any contraindications to cardiac rehabilitation?

    • Patients with mental health disorders
    • Patients with terminal stages of chronic diseases
    • Patients who are not motivated for rehabilitation (forced by relatives)
    • Acute patient conditions
    • Musculoskeletal disorders that prevent participation in a physical rehabilitation program
    • Uncontrolled autoimmune or infectious diseases

    When is cardiac rehabilitation discontinued?

    • Onset of unstable angina;
    • Onset of serious cardiac arrhythmias during exercise;
    • Progression/development/worsening of heart failure;
    • History of cardiac arrest during physical exertion;
    • An inflammatory (or other) disease that requires treatment and a break in rehabilitation;
    • Need to leave due to family circumstances for 1 week (with advance notice and on condition of continuing homework) – option to freeze attendance;
    • Missing a scheduled session without a valid reason / failure to give notice of absence less than 12 hours before the start – the session will be charged;
    • Missing 3 (THREE) scheduled sessions without a valid reason – termination of rehabilitation.
