Ultrasound examination (USG) of joints is a modern, safe and informative diagnostic method that allows you to assess the condition of joints and surrounding tissues. This non-invasive procedure helps to detect various pathologies at early stages, contributing to the timely treatment and prevention of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
Inflammatory diseases of the joints (arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis)
Degenerative-dystrophic changes (arthrosis)
Traumatic injuries of ligaments, tendons, meniscus
Presence of effusion (fluid) in the joint cavity
Congenital anomalies of joint development
Knee joint – diagnosis of arthritis, arthrosis, meniscus injuries, ligaments and tendons.
Hip joint – assessment of the condition of cartilage, dysplasia, inflammatory processes.
Shoulder joint – detection of tendinitis, bursitis, muscle and ligament tears.
Elbow joint – diagnosis of epicondylitis, inflammatory processes, presence of effusion.
Ankle joint (foot) – assessment of the condition of ligaments, tendons, arthritis, arthrosis.
Wrist joint (hand) – detection of tunnel syndrome, inflammation of the joint capsule, tendon injuries.
Sternoclavicular joint – checking changes after injuries, inflammatory processes.
Pain, swelling or limited mobility in the joints
Joint injuries, sprains, meniscal damage
Suspicion of arthritis, arthrosis or other inflammatory processes
The presence of tumors or neoplasms in the joint area
Monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment or rehabilitation
An ultrasound of the joints is an absolutely painless and safe procedure that lasts up to 45 minutes (depending on the required scope of the examination).
A special gel is applied to the examination area, which improves the transmission of the ultrasound signal. The doctor displays the image on the ultrasound device screen in real time and makes the necessary measurements (examines the structure of the tissues, the condition of the cartilage, muscles, tendons, joint bags).
After that, the specialist draws a conclusion based on the results of the ultrasound examination.
No special preparation is usually required for a joint ultrasound. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove or lift to access the area being examined. If the lower extremity joints are to be examined, it is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise the day before the procedure.
An ultrasound examination is performed to examine tissues whose condition cannot be assessed by X-ray. The condition of the muscles, cartilage, joint capsules and tendons is simultaneously checked. The doctor performs an ultrasound scan of two joints at once for comparative analysis, which allows for a diagnosis.
