Common Deficiencies in Adults

Vitamin D Deficiency

  • ❗️Symptoms: fatigue, muscle and bone pain, frequent colds, bad mood.
  • ❓Causes: Insufficient intake with food and sunlight, the presence of concomitant diseases (cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s disease and celiac disease, obesity, kidney and liver disease).
  • ✅ Prevention: regular walks in the fresh air, including fatty fish (herring, salmon, tuna, mackerel), eggs and liver in the diet.

Iron deficiency

  • ❗️Symptoms: weakness, dizziness, excessive hair loss, distorted taste (craving for unusual foods, such as chalk).
  • ❓Causes: insufficient intake and/or impaired absorption with food, increased need (pregnancy, lactation, intensive growth), the effect of certain medications, chronic blood loss (heavy menstruation, gastrointestinal diseases)
  • ✅ Prevention: including iron-containing foods (e.g. meat) in the diet; control of tea, coffee, milk.

Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency

  • ❗️Symptoms: weakness, dizziness, irritability, memory impairment, numbness of the extremities, constipation, hair loss.
  • ❓Causes: gastrointestinal diseases, veganism, vegetarianism, insufficient amount of meat, fish, eggs in the diet, the effect of some medications.
  • ✅ Prevention: inclusion in the diet of meat, fish (mackerel, cod, tuna, salmon) and eggs.

Magnesium deficiency

  • ❗️Symptoms: muscle cramps, arrhythmias, anxiety, headache, sleep problems.
  • ❓Causes: stress, coffee abuse, insufficient consumption of foods with magnesium.
  • ✅ Prevention: inclusion in the diet of greens (spinach, arugula, Chinese cabbage, celery), nuts and seeds, bananas, avocados, dried apricots, legumes (peas, beans, soybeans, chickpeas) and whole grain products.

Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency

  • ❗️Symptoms: decreased concentration, dry skin, hair loss, joint pain, depressed mood and sleep problems.
  • ❓Causes: insufficient intake and/or impaired absorption with food.
  • ✅ Prevention: including fatty fish (herring, salmon, tuna, mackerel), seaweed and flaxseed in the diet.
